Kesälahti (Swedish: Keselax) is a former municipality of Finland located in the North Karelia region. On 1 January 2013, the municipality was consolidated with the neighboring city of Kitee.

The municipality was unilingual Finnish. It was known for its scenic location between two major lakes and its historical significance in the Karelian region.

History

Kesälahti was founded as an independent parish in 1728. Its location on the borderlands between Sweden (later the Grand Duchy of Finland) and Russia influenced its early development. The area has a long history of settlement due to its fertile lands and proximity to waterways.

In April 2012, the municipal councils of Kesälahti and Kitee voted to merge the two entities. The decision was driven by the need to secure public services and stabilize the local economy. The merger officially took place on New Year's Day, 2013, at which point Kesälahti became a district of Kitee.

Geography

Kesälahti is situated on an isthmus between two large lakes:

The landscape is characterized by eskers, pine forests, and water. The Highway 6 (Valtatie 6) and the Karelian railway pass through the area, making it a transport hub for the region.

Culture and Attractions

Despite its consolidation, Kesälahti maintains a distinct local identity. Every summer, the village hosts various events that celebrate its Karelian heritage.

Demographics

At the time of its consolidation in late 2012, Kesälahti had a population of approximately 2,324 inhabitants. The population density was roughly 6 inhabitants per square kilometer of land. Like many rural municipalities in eastern Finland, the area faced challenges related to an aging population and migration to larger urban centers.
